The Chronicle's editorial board endorsed Lurie. Breed's campaign tells supporters a different story

Mayor London Breed’s reelection campaign sent an email to supporters Wednesday that suggested she was endorsed by the Chronicle’s editorial board when she was not.

The editorial board, which operates separately from the Chronicle’s newsroom, endorsed Breed’s rival Daniel Lurie on Tuesday.

The email from Breed’s campaign was titled “SF Chronicle Endorsement: Breed is the safe choice for mayor.” That’s only part of the editorial board’s online headline, which goes on to say “But if you think S.F. needs change, only one candidate fits” — referring to Lurie, a nonprofit founder and Levi Strauss heir who is one of Breed’s four main opponents.

Breed’s email went on to selectively quote portions of the Chronicle’s editorial that praised Breed or invoked criticism of Lurie. The mayor’s campaign highlighted the editorial’s statement that she “deserves credit” for how she handled “immense challenges” such as the pandemic. The email did not quote the next sentence of the editorial, which said that “there’s no doubt the small things suffered under her watch — perhaps most noticeably our empirically filthy streets, quantified as such by a Controller’s Office report last year.”
