Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao's predecessor says she should be recalled

ormer Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf has announced she is supporting a recall effort targeting her successor, Sheng Thao.

Schaaf criticized Thao in an interview Friday with KQED, saying that over the past year she has come to believe that Thao “is not capable of growing into the job.”

“I am voting to recall Mayor Thao because Oakland can’t afford another two years of continued damage to our fiscal solvency and our public safety,” Schaaf told KQED.

Thao narrowly won the 2022 election after Schaaf termed out. Schaaf, who is running for California treasurer, had endorsed Thao’s main competitor, moderate Loren Taylor.
