Solano reports ballot returns about half of what it was in 2020

AIRFIELD — The Solano County Registrar of Voters Office is heading into the final full week before the Nov. 5 election – and only 17.8% of the registered voters have returned a ballot as of Thursday.

John Gardner, the assistant registrar of voters, reported that as of Friday, 48,000 mail-in ballots had been received.

"It's a little bit low. If we compare that to the 2020 presidential election, it's about half" of what had been received, Gardner said.

It is twice as many as what was received at this time in 2022, "but we would expect more for a presidential election."

If Harris is going to win - one of the following has to be true:

The polls are off a couple points in Trump’s direction
The electorate needs to shift leftward
In the final days of the race
OR Trump’s advantage in the electoral college declined

The third one is an interesting possibility. It could be that a narrow lead nationally could still turn into an electoral win. But it would mean that we win California and New York more narrowly than normal
