Brown wins at-large council seat in Oakland but other undecided races still too close to call

Rowena Brown, a state legislative director, has won the at-large City Council seat in Oakland in a defeat over former Police Chief LeRonne Armstrong, according to the latest vote results released late Friday.

Brown, the legislative director for Assembly Member Mia Bonta, had secured nearly 57% of the ranked choice vote as of Nov. 15, some 10 days after the polls closed. Armstrong had just over 43%.

Brown did not immediately return a request for comment.

Her win comes as Oakland grapples with major issues, including a change in top leadership. Residents convincingly voted to recall Mayor Sheng Thao with more than 60% of the vote less than two years into her first term.
