SF-BOS08: San Francisco District 8 supervisor contest hits the debate stage
The race for the District 8 seat on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors is revving up with less than seven months to go until the November 3 general election. A series of forums with the three gay men in the race will take place in the coming weeks, while the candidates are rolling out endorsements and opening up campaign headquarters.
Vying to succeed termed out gay incumbent Supervisor Rafael Mandelman, currently board president, are Gary McCoy, a longtime political aide to Congressmember Nancy Pelosi (D-San Francisco); patent attorney Michael Trung Nguyen, who performs as drag queen Juicy Liu; and Emanuel "Manny" Yekutiel, the owner of the eponymously named cafe and event space on Valencia Street a few blocks outside the boundaries of the supervisorial district. The seat includes the LGBTQ Castro neighborhood along with Noe Valley, Diamond Heights, Duboce Triangle, Twin Peaks, Corona Heights, and parts of Cole Valley.
This Thursday evening the trio of out contenders will take part in their first public-facing forum when they gather at the queer-owned womens sports bar Rikkis in the Castro for an event being organized by a group of queer women. (The three candidates have sat together for endorsement meetings with several groups to date that werent open to the general public.)
As the Bay Area Reporters News Briefs column noted, the forum is designed to make space for queer women, trans, and nonbinary people. It will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. at the business located at 2223 Market Street; due to space constraints attendees are asked to RSVP ahead of time here.
