New poll shows California governor race down to 3 frontrunners
The race for California governor appears to be down to three candidates vying for two spots in the November runoff, based on the final Emerson College/Inside California Politics poll ahead of Tuesdays primary.
Former Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra, a Democrat, leads the field with 28% support among likely voters, followed by fellow Democrat and billionaire Tom Steyer at 22% and Republican commentator Steve Hilton at 21%. Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco, a Republican, was fourth with 12%. Democrats Katie Porter, Matt Mahan and Antonio Villaraigosa were in the mid- to low single digits.
The survey, released Saturday morning, was conducted May 27-28 and polled 1,000 likely voters. The margin of error was 3%.
Xavier Becerra maintains frontrunner status
while Tom Steyer and Steve Hilton both have paths to advance to the November general election, said Spencer Kimball, executive director of Emerson College Polling. If support for Chad Bianco melts come Election Day, Hilton is likely to pull ahead, while Steyers path relies heavily on young voters turning in their ballots.
