For University of Northern Colorado president, bad reviews, large raises a common occurrence

Despite consistently poor reviews from faculty members, University of Northern Colorado President Kay Norton is earning $100,000 more in annual salary than she was in 2012. Norton, who has come under fire in the past two years for a variety of reasons, is set to earn $316,000 this year — still below the average for universities UNC uses for comparison, but $104,000 more than she earned four years ago. The salary also is about $50,000 higher than the 2015-16 median salary for college and university presidents, according to a 300-institution survey by the College and University Professional Association for Human Resources.

After being frozen for three years (2009-10, 2010-11 and 2011-12), Norton’s salary has gone up by nearly 50 percent in the years since. Still, UNC spokesman Nate Haas said Norton’s salary is still at just 75 percent of the average for universities UNC uses for comparison.

This past spring, in an annual faculty survey, anywhere from 40 percent to 60 percent of respondents gave Norton poor marks.

In the survey, faculty members were asked to rank the level to which they agree with 10 affirmative statements, with “strongly agree” representing the highest mark and “strongly disagree” representing the lowest.
