Pet cat in Evergreen tests positive for plague

A domestic cat in Evergreen has tested positive for plague, Jefferson County health officials announced Monday.

Jefferson County Public Health says it’s not uncommon for cats to become infected with plague in an environment where plague is circulating. The cat is now under the care of a veterinarian.

Dave Volkel, the department’s health specialist, said the case should remind the public of the importance of keeping their pets from roaming free and using appropriate flea control products.

Plague is found in various species of rodents and rabbits and is transmitted by fleas, officials say.

Had to take the boy cat in for rabies shot last week. I had to take a stool sample. Apparently testing for this parasite is a regular thing now.
