Swastika etchings covered, removed from playground at Longmont's Loomiller Park

Longmont's parks department plans to reinstall a piece of playground equipment at Loomiller Park later this week that was removed after someone etched a swastika into it.

The city's parks team removed a wheel on the playground structure and covered up a series of the offensive symbols Monday, and will continue work once snowplow operations are complete, Longmont spokeswoman Holly Milne said Tuesday.

"We will sand the swastikas out of the wheel, paint with a similar color and reinstall," Milne wrote in an email. "We will sand all other surfaces on the playground with vulgar language and pictures and will paint with a similar color."

Police also have been assigned to follow up on the report to determine when the swastikas were carved and by whom, Cmdr. Joel Post said.
