Democratic candidates for Colorado attorney general are making big fundraising hauls

Democratic candidates for Colorado attorney general are making big fundraising hauls as Cynthia Coffman weighs gubernatorial bid

Democratic candidates for Colorado attorney general are hauling in hundreds of thousands in fundraising dollars as incumbent Republican Cynthia Coffman weighs whether to seek another term or join the crowded race for governor.

The uncertainty could create problems for any GOP candidates who seek to become the state’s top law enforcement officer should Coffman ultimately jump into the gubernatorial contest, as they will likely have to play catch-up.

“The quicker they can sort that out, (it’s) probably the better for them,” said Eric Sondermann, an independent political analyst in Denver.

If Coffman runs for governor and another Republican ends up seeking the attorney general’s post, Sondermann said, that person could rely on an independent expenditure committee to catch up to the Democrats’ hauls. (Such committees, which can raise unlimited sums but cannot coordinate with candidates, are already playing a role in the gubernatorial race.)
