Palisade considering sales tax increase ballot measure for November
The Palisade Board of Trustees is considering asking voters for a 2% sales tax increase this November to help fund infrastructure projects and emergency services.
The Trustees discussed potential ballot language at a Tuesday work session, which would authorize the town to increase sales tax from 2% to 4% if approved by voters. Town Administrator Janet Hawkinson said the town estimated that would raise an additional $750,000 annually for the town.
Trustee Sarah Matchett said she wanted the ballot language, if it is adopted, to be clear that it would be restricted to just capital infrastructure projects and to fund services like police and fire. She said if that was clear, she felt the measure would have more support.
A lot of people I have talked to about it ask, How do I ensure this money is going to infrastructure and emergency services? Matchett said. Theyre like, Im for it, if we do that.
