Denver City Council puts affordable housing sales tax hike on ballot

A divided Denver City Council on Monday approved a November ballot measure that will ask Denver voters to hike the city’s sales tax by 0.5 points.

Several amendments were made by the council and the sales tax increase measure now includes a sunset provision of 40 years.

If approved, Denver’s sales tax will be 9.31%, and if another sales tax to fund Denver Health — the city’s safety net hospital system — is approved, sales taxes will be raised an additional 0.34 points. A total sales tax of 9.65% would be one of the highest in the metro area.

The measure passed 9-4, with several councilmembers continuing to protest what they see as an incomplete and rushed measure. Notably, two councilmembers flipped their position when compared to last week‘s session.
