Upcoming Colorado ballot measure seeks to remove bail in first degree murder cases

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) - In just a few weeks, voters all across Colorado will be getting their ballots for November’s General Election. One of the measures that will be on that ballot is Amendment I, which deals with bond matters for violent criminals. If passed, it would allow people charged with first degree murder to be held without bond.

Those behind the amendment told 11 News that is supposed to fill some gaps that were left after Colorado’s death penalty was repealed in 2020. One sponsor of the measure said that it holds the most dangerous offenders accountable, while keeping the public safe, adding that it also has bi-partisan support.

11 News spoke with voters on Monday about the issue.

“I believe in the presumption of innocence. Until proven guilty, they should definitely have a chance to be free and get their affairs in order if they have that opportunity,” said Samuel Johnson, a voter.
