What Proposition 131 would do to Colorado's election systems, a break down ahead of November

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) - November’s general election is less than 45 days away, which means your ballot will be in the mail in the coming weeks. One of the 14 state ballot measures you will be voting on is Proposition 131. You may have seen commercials or received mailings on this, it’s the “Top Four Ranked Choice Voting” initiative. The measure would change how voters vote and would replace how Colorado does elections in some races like U.S. Senate, House of Representatives, governor, and other state offices.

“All candidates would be listed on the same ballot, regardless of their partisan affiliations. In other words, no republican or democrat primaries,” said Ryan Byrne, an editor with Ballotpedia.

Prop 131 is a two-part measure. If passed, voters would choose from multiple candidates to move from the primary to the general election, and rank their choices one to four on the ballot.

“If their top choice doesn’t get enough votes, then that person is eliminated then it goes to the second choice,” said Byrne.
