Fire at mosque in New Haven

NEW HAVEN — There were reports of a working fire at the Diyanet Mosque of New Haven on Middletown Avenue Sunday afternoon.

According to the New Haven fire department Twitter account, the call came in shortly after 4 p.m. Sunday. The reports called it a two -alarm fire, which started on the structure’s first floor and spread to the second.

Several fire companies responded to the blaze, which was mostly under control shortly before 4:30 p.m. WTNH reports that the cause of the fire is under investigation.

The mosque had been undergoing construction to reduce the size of its minarets. Before that project began in July 2018, the structures — a gift from the Turkish government — stood 81 feet tall, a violation of the building permit issued by the Board of Zoning Appeals in 2015. The plan was to reduce them to 57 feet.
