Minimum age for buying tobacco products going to 21

The minimum age to buy various tobacco products, including cigarettes and electronic “vaping” systems, is set to be raised to 21 after the Senate approved the measure 33-3 on Friday.

The measure moves next to the desk of Gov. Ned Lamont, who said he will sign it into law.

The bill also calls for the annual fee for a tobacco-product dealer's license to increase from $50 to $200.

The money raised from the fee increase will be used to enforce compliance with new regulations and to help recoup sales tax dollars lost by eliminating sales to people in the 18-to-20 age range.

One of the more controversial provisions that had been considered — outlawing flavored vaping products for people of all ages — was removed from the bill before it cleared the House last month.
