Somers approves sale of land to Hillsdale College for $30,000

SOMERS — During a town meeting on Thursday night, town officials and residents voted to sell a vacant half-acre of town-owned land at 750 Hall Hill Road for $30,000 to the Michigan-based Hillsdale College, which is opening a religious center across multiple properties on that road.

Both the public hearing and town meeting on the matter were held at Town Hall and streamed live online at the same time.

Voting in favor of the sale were a handful of citizens participating in the town meeting and also First Selectman C. G. “Bud” Knorr and Chief Financial Officer Michael Marinaccio, who were both present at Town Hall.

The lone dissenter was Ralph Williams, a local resident who is an alternate member of the Zoning Board of Appeals.

Williams spoke out during the public hearing, which was held before the town meeting, saying he was cautious about selling the land to the college after it had failed to follow through on its promise to reimburse the town for money lost due to the establishment of the religious center, which is tax exempt.
