Protesters rename Calhoun College at Yale Saddam Hussein, as university committee on renaming meets

NEW HAVEN >> A small but vocal group of protesters used duct tape Friday to temporarily rename Yale’s Calhoun College for Saddam Hussein.

It was the latest effort of a small but persistent group of New Haven-area residents who have been protesting the name of the residential college for weeks

This week, about a dozen people, including a Calhoun alumnus but no current students, chanted and held a bright orange banner across Elm Street when traffic was stopped at the red light.

“Calhoun does not deserve his fame! Change the name!” shouted the group, led by Briam Timko of New Haven. “I don’t think you should honor someone who supported slavery,” she said between chants. The protest, she said, is meant “just to show Yale that the name itself is offensive.”
