State Auditors Question $250,000 Severance Payment For CHFA Employee

The state auditors are questioning a severance payment of more than $250,000 for a state employee who was not required to report to work daily during a three-month transition period.

The auditors said it was "questionable" for the Connecticut Housing Finance Authority to award a large severance to Eric L. Chatman, the former president and executive director who left the agency last year after about 21/2 years on the job.

In a report issued Tuesday, the bipartisan auditors said the housing authority should "avoid making payments that could be deemed unreasonable."

Public records state that Chatman was paid more than $323,000 during the 2015 fiscal year and received fringe benefits worth $47,348 for total compensation of $370,832.
