Malloy Blasts Legalizing Recreational Marijuana
Stopping just short of using the word "veto,'' Gov. Dannel P. Malloy blasted the legalization of recreational marijuana Thursday and said it should not come up as an issue next month in the legislature.
In some of his strongest remarks yet on the topic, Malloy criticized the legalization that took effect Thursday in Massachusetts after a referendum.
"First of all, I think it's a mistake what Massachusetts has done and other states have done,'' Malloy told reporters in Hartford. "I think we should hit the pause button and watch how it works in the region. ... I think it's a mistake.''
Malloy also rejected the idea of legalizing marijuana for the tax money that would be generated - an argument that has been made across the country by pro-marijuana advocates. He predicted that the social costs for drug treatment and various programs will cost more than the amount of money raised in tax revenue.
