Newark Mayor Jerry Clifton will not run again in 2025

Newark Mayor Jerry Clifton is riding off into the sunset of public office next year.

Clifton is not running for reelection in 2025 after his latest term as the city's mayor. He has been mayor since a special election in January 2024, taking over Stu Markham's term after he abruptly resigned from the office in September 2023.

Clifton is a veteran of Newark city government. He was a member of the City Council, held the deputy mayor position for nine years and already served as the city's mayor from 2019 to 2022. His total of 23 years in local government and another 21 years with the military have been enough time for the 73-year-old Clifton.

"I just think it's the right time to move on," Clifton said Wednesday. He came to the decision earlier this week.

He was my 2nd choice when he ran to replace Markham. Maybe we’ll get someone who isn’t as supportive of large local developers trying to turn Newark into little Wilmington and rename the town from Newark to “Langville” filling it with luxury dormitories and 7+ story hotels that only fill to capacity on graduation and home game weekends.
