An elderly woman is dead after a vehicle she was inside was stolen at Washington Hospital Center and later crashed into a building in downtown D.C. on Monday afternoon, police say.
A white SUV was stolen at Washington Hospital Center in the 100 block of Irving Street just before 1:15 p.m., according to Darnel Robinson, an assistant chief with D.C. police.
The driver stepped out of the SUV and at that point a woman went inside and drove away with the vehicle owners elderly mother still in the front passenger seat, police said. The vehicle owner called police and officers placed a lookout on the SUV.
Shortly after stealing the SUV, D.C. police said the suspect crashed into the corner of a building at 6th and D Street Northwest, which is where the U.S. Attorneys Office for D.C. is located. An officer who was driving northbound on 6th street saw the crash happen in his rearview mirror, Robinson said.

The woman accused of stealing an SUV outside a D.C. hospital with an ill patient in the passenger seat was found incompetent to stand trial Tuesday.
Kayla Kenisha Brown, 22, of Southeast, is accused of crashing the stolen car into a downtown D.C. building in early June. The passenger, 55-year-old Leslie Marie Gaines, of Northeast D.C., died shortly after the crash.
Brown, who has been charged with carjacking, was committed Tuesday to Saint Elizabeths Hospital for treatment for restoration of competence, according to court documents. Another hearing regarding her ability to stand trial will be held Aug. 16.
