ABC7, Tornado Watch issued in parts of greater DC area as Elsa approaches, July 8, 2021.
WASHINGTON (7NEWS) **2PM UPDATE**
The National Weather Service has issued tornado WATCHES for St. Marys, Calvert, and Westmoreland Counties in our area, but the watch area extends east to the shore, and as far south as southeastern North Carolina.
Elsa, the fifth named storm of the Atlantic Hurricane Season, remains a tropical storm currently over the Carolinas bringing bands of heavy rain and gusty winds. Elsa continues to weaken over land; however, the storm is still bringing heavy rain and gusty winds to the southeast.
The highest impacts from the storm will be felt along the coast. Locally, tropical storm warnings are in effect for St. Mary's and Calvert counties. At this point, the latest local forecast has winds below tropical storm force (39 mph). Winds will range from 10-20 mph with gusts to 35 mph. Stronger gusts are possible, though, so stay Weather Alert.
