WASHINGTON (7News) The Glover Park Hotel in Northwest Washington, located directly across the street from the Russian Embassy, unfurled a 60-foot Ukrainian flag Wednesday.
Community members, including several who are from Ukraine and now live in the DC area, stood in the rain to watch as the flag was hung from the hotel. Some in the crowd cheered as it happened, and drivers passing by along Wisconsin Avenue honked their horns.
Initially, I received a call from a local resident, who is of Ukrainian descent, and she wanted to put a flag up, said Brenden Giroux, who is the general manager of the Glover Park Hotel. Initially it was going to be just a typical six-foot flag, and then she got in touch with the Alamo Flag Company, and they donated a 60-foot flag, and we thought hey let's make a fundraising event out of it.
In addition to the flag display, Giroux said the Glover Park Hotel would also donate all proceeds from Wednesday's 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. food and beverage sales to the National Bank of Ukraines fundraising account for humanitarian assistance.
