The man who brought baseball back to the nations capital has died at the age of 97.
Ted Lerner, the former principal owner of the Washington Nationals, died Sunday, according to a news release from the team.
Lerner, a real estate mogul in the D.C. area, purchased the Montreal Expos from Major League Baseball for $450 million, bringing baseball back to D.C. in 2005 after a three-decade absence.
After early struggles on the field, the Nats made the playoffs five times between 2012 and 2019 and eventually won the World Series in 2019.
