Sweet 16 party blamed for COVID spike at 3 Florida schools

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. (CBS12) — A Sweet 16 birthday party is being blamed for an outbreak of COVID-19 at three schools in central Florida.

As a result, the Orange County Health Department made an urgent plea to the community to avoid birthday parties of any kind.

"We know that it was a Sweet 16," said Dr. Paul Pino, the director of the Orange County Health Department. "We know that about 30 kids participated from more than one high school."

The party happened Oct. 10 in the Avalon Park area, and included a number of athletes. Half of the party guests contracted COVID-19, the health department said.
