For three years Corey Capps had been dreaming of catching the massive alligator in the river behind his home in Blountstown, Florida. Capps told CNN he and his wife were taking a boat ride on the Apalachicola River when they spotted the gator laying up on the bank.
He called his friend Rodney Smith, who had state-issued gator tags that allowed them to legally go after the animal.
"Three different times in the last two months, I've been back there fishing and he's stalked me. ... So me and him, something was going to give between the two of us," he said.

What a monster. Nile crocs get to 1,200 lbs and they look like dinosaurs.

(6,135 posts)But they are not aggressive. Stupid people feed them chickens, so when we sit on the banks of the large ponds, the gators come to check if we will throw some raw chickens in water.
In Florida all large ponds usually will have a resident gator. Swim with extreme caution.

(18,007 posts)when we lived in Mississippi. We also had a small dog little larger than a chihuahua. This makes a perfect meal for most gators.
When we first got to Mississippi, my brother and I stupidly went into the water in the bayou. The leeches kept us from doing that again. Seeing the gators reinforced staying out of there.

(24,183 posts)When I was a kid, gators were "shoot on sight", so rivers and lakes were kept clear and people could swim anywhere. They changed the laws when I was older and now the gators now own the waters and it is totally not safe to go in except in a boat or in places where the gators are kept out and those are few and far between. There are some places that have a lot of tourists and the gators stay away during the day, like Jenny Springs and Ichetucknee, but you have to stay in the springs and stay out of the water in the evening and night because the gators take over then.
