Nikki Fried, Florida's Democratic agriculture commissioner, has announced a run for governor in a bid to unseat Republican incumbent Ron DeSantis, who she previously called an "authoritarian dictator."
Fried, who is the only Democrat on Florida's cabinet, made the announcement in a video posted to Twitter on Tuesday.
"I'm Nikki Fried, and I'm here to break the rigged system here in Florida. It's corrupt, it's anti-democratic, and it's time for something new," she said in the video.
"Listen, this won't be easy. Those in power will do whatever harm it takes to stay there. But I have spent my whole life taking on the system. I am unafraid, I'm tested, I am ready," she said.

(778 posts)I am still a Charlie Crist fan, but I have read that she may have a better chance of getting the younger vote. At least we have two good candidates and the GOP has no good candidate. I had originally hoped Val Deming would be running for that office, but it sounds like she plans on taking on Marco Rubio.

MIAMI Four days before she filed her paperwork to run for governor, Florida Agriculture Commissioner Nikki Fried amended two forms to disclose she made a substantial amount more as a marijuana lobbyist than previously reported.
The first change, a last-minute amendment to her 2018 financial disclosure forms first reported by blog Tallahassee Reports, shows that Fried, 43, changed the amount of annual income she made from her consulting firm Igniting Florida from $72,000 to $351,480 on May 28, days before she announced that she will seek the Democratic nomination to run for governor against incumbent Ron DeSantis. The form was first amended in January 2020 to reflect the $72,000 income for the first time.
A 2020 form says the major source of the firms income was Frieds client San Felasco Nurseries, a medical marijuana license holder that sold in 2018 to Harvest Health & Recreation Inc. Harvest was recently acquired by Quincy-based marijuana giant Trulieve, and Fried listed about $200,000 invested in the company on her 2019 financial disclosure forms.
She also amended her 2017 disclosure forms Friday, which were filed with the Florida Division of Elections, raising her recorded consulting income from $84,000 to $165,761.

(778 posts)Is she going to be able to overcome this? Was it just a mistake that she corrected or was she truly trying to hide income and knew she had to come clean now? I hope it isn't the latter.
