Tropical Storm Elsa strengthening as rain and wind begin to lash Florida
Tropical Storm Elsa showed signs of strengthening Tuesday morning as heavy rains deluged the Florida Keys and southwest portions of the Sunshine State. Much of Florida and the Southeast are bracing for impacts from the storm, which could bring heavy rain, strong winds and tornadoes, as well as an ocean surge along the coast.
Elsa may ride up the entire East Coast, bringing rain and gusty winds from coastal Georgia into New England between Wednesday and Friday.
The inclement weather is affecting South Florida as the search effort continues at the site of the June 24 collapse of the Champlain Towers South condo building in Surfside. Miami has seen more than three inches of rain since Monday as outer bands from the storm have pivoted northward.
With heavy rain and strong winds lashing the Florida Keys and Southwest Florida, tropical storm warnings stretch from the Florida Peninsulas southwest tip north toward near Panama City, while also covering the Keys from Craig Key westward.
