Florida lawmakers are debating a bill that would allow schools districts to put cameras in classrooms and microphones on teachers.
The measure was proposed by state Representative Bob Rommel, a Republican from Naples.
"I think if we can do it in a safe way to protect the privacy of students and teachers, I think we should do it," he told CBS Miami. "I haven't heard a response good or bad from any teachers, but it's not their private space. It's our children's space, too."

(15,674 posts)Well, if they pass this, they won't have any teachers at all.
The next step would be to remove all certification requirements and let any old moron teach kids.

And this proposal from a politician with the name "Rommel".
Now some daycares do offer a way for parents to view things online... I've mixed thoughts about this. School is a "workplace" so security cameras are called for in certain locations. Microphones on teachers: no. A mic on a security camera filming a classroom will be sufficient, and only where the security camera is warranted.
If the purpose of this is so that parents can see what the teachers are doing in their classroom well there's already a solution. The parent is welcome to volunteer to help out in that school any time they want.

(2,316 posts)Not just the fixed camera and sometimes no mike which they grudgingly allow CSPAN to broadcast. Body cams and mikes for legislators and government paid staff members. The Capitol complex is "...not their private space. It's our space, too."

(1,153 posts)They are so scared of a teacher saying anything to the kids that come anywhere near Critical Race Theory. They can not allow the white kids to hear anything that would change what they tell their kids at home. They then grow up to become their parents and continue the way of the republican party of today. The next thing that they will ban is anything about what happened on Jan 6th. So the minds of their republican children won`t become disillusioned with the republican way of life.

I think he should be asked if he owns stock in security companies and surveillance equipment.

(68 posts)As a teacher, I would LOVE for some parents to see how despicable their kids act. They would be ashamed of them. I have nothing to hide. Mic and camera me up! I'm always professional and a great teacher. I would actually welcome being observed by the world. It's one of the few things that I disagree with the teacher's union about. They are adamantly against it, but I think it would knock the socks off of some indulgent parents with entitled kids and overly lenient administrators to see how awful some of the students are. OR, maybe it would have the unintended consequences of making the students behave if they knew they were being observed? In one of my lessons, I have students act as TV anchors. They write their own scripts and sit at a desk and pretend to present the news while I film them. During this week of "broadcast news," I leave my camcorder in the corner. When a student starts to act up, they look at the camera and ask, "Is that thing on?" I always say yes, and then they sit down and behave, one eye on the camera. I love it!
