School resource officer will be disciplined after firing his weapon in Martin County school

(MARTIN COUNTY, Florida)– New details have been released involving a school resource officer (SRO) discharging his service firearm in a Treasure Coast charter school.

[...]

Sheriff Snyder went on to say, “It went through the wall, through the hallway into a bookcase in adjoining classroom,”

While no one was hurt in the incident, the department has said the SRO will be disciplined and receive further training.

The SRO’s job is not in jeopardy, and the exact form of the disciplinary action has not yet been announced.

First for not checking the chamber and second for “practicing” in the school.

You have to wonder what’s wrong with these people.

Good Lord. Anyone stupid enough to discharge a loaded gun inside a school shouldn't be allowed to carry a firearm, much less be a cop.

the SRO job was/is where cops were sent when they did stupid shit. It was regarded as a step above the job of crossing guard.

MARTIN COUNTY, Fla. (CBS12) — Today, Martin County Sheriff William Snyder provided details of an investigation into an incident involving a Martin County Deputy, who accidentally fired a shot inside the Treasure Coast Classical Academy, a charter school in Stuart, yesterday afternoon. Fortunately, nobody was injured.

The sheriff says the deputy had the gun in his hand and was performing a dry fire before going to the range but one bullet was still left in the chamber.

“He did it inappropriately and he did it in an inappropriate place,” Sheriff Snyder stated.

The Sheriff says the incident happened shortly before 2 p.m. yesterday, around dismissal but it could have been a lot worse if classes were in session.

“It went through the wall, through the hallway into a bookcase in adjoining classroom," said Sheriff Snyder.

Dry firing is the act of pulling the trigger of a firearm without ammunition in the weapon. Although the sheriff says the deputy, who is the school resource officer, showed poor judgment, he wasn’t completely reckless.

“It was unnecessary, it was inappropriate but it wasn’t completely reckless," Snyder remarked. "He wasn’t playing with the firearm, he wasn’t handling it in a careless manner.”
