If you're not paying for the email, then somebody else is ... and they own it
and set the rules.

How many people read the terms & conditions on their gmail account? How
many people read the terms & conditions from their IT department? How
many people are surprised that their email (and calendars and ...) are subject
to discoveries?

The biggest problem here is that the person is in Florida ....

You are on the clock — your time is theirs
You are in their building — your work product is theirs
You are using their computer or lab equipment — the contents are theirs
You create or invent a patentable item — the patent is theirs

There is NO presumption of privacy if you use the university’s computers for email or work. (Some have discovered the hard way that there is likewise no presumption of privacy if you cruise for porn.)

Use your own phone. Use your own computer. Never confuse theirs and yours, especially if part of your job involves taking your employer’s computer home.

I worked on the staff side, not the academic side. Academics are accustomed to having more freedom in how they use their time, especially in the old days. But the institution is an employer, and they can invoke their own rights, which are considerable.

That is just lovely. I'd certainly cancel my email account with the university. Sometimes "free" is far too expensive to maintain.

There's just no two ways about it. The voters twice had the chance to reject this shit. Apparently a majority of FL voters enjoy living in Nazi Florida.

Although I understand and have lived in the Corporate America world and know the rules on Corporate time, use of corp technology and intellectual property assigning back to the corporation. But this is taking it another level when Big Brother comes for you over work emails.
