Sponsors of the proposed abortion-rights state constitutional amendment are nearly 270,000 petition signatures away from qualifying for the 2024 general election ballot, presuming the Florida Supreme Court and Attorney General Ashley Moody who is opposed to the initiative dont get in the way.
As of the latest update posted Friday on the Florida Division of Elections website, Floridians Protecting Freedom had collected 621,690 signatures toward the 891,523 they need by Feb. 1 to qualify for the ballot. The total equals 8% of the votes cast in the last presidential election.
Sponsors also need to reach that 8% threshold in at least half of Floridas 28 congressional districts. As of Friday, theyd reached that mark in four districts CD 4 in Clay, Duval, and Nassau counties; CD 10, Orange County; CD 13, Pinellas County; and CD 14, Hillsborough and Pinellas counties.
Supporters recently began to focus on 10 districts: CD 2, CD 3, CD 7, CD 9, CD 15, CD 16, CD 17, CD 21, CD 22, and CD 23.

(211 posts)to spread the word a bit and maybe get more valid signatures. Abortion on the ballot really helps democrats and Florida needs all the help it can get. If we don't do anything we definitely loose. If we try, we might win or at the very least make the GOP spend resources in Florida that it could use elsewhere otherwise.
If you don't live in Florida but know people who do that might sign, please send them the information and the link to sign.

(8,240 posts)We have 29,287 out of the needed 35,671. The number that we have would exceed the number needed in many congressional districts. Sadly, most of the South Florida CDs covering urban Miami-Dade and Broward (Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood) are lagging. See the counts here: https://dos.elections.myflorida.com/initiatives/initSignDetailCounty.asp?account=83927&seqnum=1&ctype=CSV&elecyear=2024

(8,677 posts)I worry the Republicans will find a way to keep it off the ballot.
There were young people at the Walmart here who were registering people to vote and also getting them to sign the abortion rights petition. Awareness is key. I found out about the petition at our local Democratic club meeting, but there are a lot of people who, I am sure, don't know about it.
Great that you're reminding us!
