Groups opposing the abortion rights measure include attorney Mathew D. Staver and his law firm Liberty Counsel, which took credit for drafting the infamous Florida Amendment 2, which voters approved in 2008 and which strictly treats marriage as exclusive defined between a man and a woman. a decision that was rejected by a federal court and ultimately led to the landmark U.S. Supreme Court decision in 2015 guaranteeing the right to gay marriage.

Although Liberty Counsel has already made arguments before the Florida Supreme Court as part of the current abortion rights ballot initiative, it is now trying to bolster its case by pointing to the Alabama ruling and arguing that personal status should actually be broader than he already is.
