They are indigenous people who have resisted and avoided being subsumed into the colonial systems of the capitalist north.

Yes they are indigenous people. Yes, they know how to survive. They can’t survive jungle destruction and “white man” diseases.

but here in Florida, if the power grid goes down
catastrophically, I will be Underdeveloped.
' They' don't fully understand that underground
high voltage is not happy underwater.
Transformers on pads in my neighborhood
popped yesterday. Leaving everyone without electricity
from the flooding the day before.
Power techs were excellent in getting it back
but the explosion was huge.

It is the categorizing of the people who have remained outside the system as ‘underdeveloped’ that just grates on me.
