Indian River County to ask voters Nov. 5 to increase bed tax for tourists from 4% to 5%.

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — An increase to the county tourist- development tax, also known as the bed tax, is expected to go before voters in November.

The increase would raise the tax from 4% to 5%. The $1 million generated by the tax hike likely would be used to fund beach renourishment projects, officials said.

"It is basically a tax on people who visit the county," explained County Commission Chair Susan Adams. "We would be using money the tourists bring in to put more money towards beaches and keeping them healthy."

"This is not a tax on residents," she stressed, "just on tourists, who use our beaches."
