With 5-vote margin, Orange County commission race is fought ballot by ballot

Volunteers representing the campaigns of Nicole Wilson and Austin Arthur are phoning voters whose vote-by-mail ballots were rejected, urging them to fill out affidavits to allow the ballots to be counted.

The forms must be filed by 5 p.m. Thursday to be tallied in the District 1 contest, where every new vote has outsized importance.

Wilson and Arthur are separated by just five votes, and appear on a crash course for recounts this weekend and potentially a photo finish.

“I’ve got volunteers who are following up with the folks regardless of party. We don’t know what’s on their ballot,” said Wilson, a Democrat. “I don’t think any vote should go uncounted.”
