The Democratic Party has a secret weapon working overtime in Florida to register new voters and get them to the polls - marijuana dispensary companies who want Amendment 3 to pass legalizing weed in Florida.
Florida currently allows medical marijuana, and it has by far the most number of people with medical marijuana cards of any other state. At the close of 2023, a staggering 831,775 Floridians had cards - nearly 4% of the population of the state. The next closest state is Oklahoma with 368,679.
The process to obtain a medical marijuana card is burdensome and expensive in Florida. You have to pay annual fees to the state. You have to make an appointment and pay a doctor every year. Then you have to pay premium prices from dispensaries, whose licenses are very limited and difficult to obtain. If you don't have a valid driver's license, or if your license has an incorrect address on it, you will be rejected.
The marijuana dispensary companies know that if Amendment 3 passes, their customer base will explode as people will no longer have to jump through hoops and pay exorbitant fees before they can buy their products. So they are pumping out emails and texts to their huge customer bases encouraging them to register to vote and show up at the polls. Florida's largest company with the largest customer base - Trulieve - has been sending out these emails to their customers:

(4,740 posts)There were so many dispensaries that assumed it was easy to get a card. That surprised me given how conservative Florida is, or at least supposed to be. Now after reading what people go through to get marijuana Im floored. There are new dispensaries going up all the time. This will be an interesting election. People are obviously deeply dedicated to their pot.

(1,102 posts)Had to get a passport picture for the state and pay the state for the application and card every year. Then pay the doctor for their application and prescription each year and pay the dispensary for the product. Very costly but it helped his pain. He had stage 4 cancer plus other medical conditions.
