Are you encountering the same level of misinformation and demonizing of FEMA as we are here in NC about Western NC after Helene? I've developed a theory after being knee-deep in NC-specific online spaces and seeing the batshit crazy level of lies going on, but I'm trying to find out if it is happening elsewhere.
Y'all have had back-to-back nightmares. My thoughts are with you as you recover.

(5,627 posts)We're in a safe area, but had our FM radio on yesterday during a power outage. Right wing stations are encouraging folks with FEMA or recovery problems to call and bitch about the government. Riling folks up inmho

(23,421 posts)Of course they have to tear anything in a Dem administration down. The narrative up here has morphed into the federal and state governments have completely abandoned NC but heres the kick: its because of FEMA having a fairly new equity lens as part of their programs. Western NC is predominantly white. Theyre trying to insinuate that white people are being abandoned.

(895 posts)My issue is that FEMA is hard to access. Theres ONE location way across the city to file claims, the FEMA app didnt even have Milton listed to apply for aid for until like 3-4 days in. Finally were able to apply for emergency funds (sons car was flattened by an oak treenot covered by his insuranceand hes still not back to work because his employer is a greedy arse who doesnt even let people work a full 40-hr week so he doesnt have to pay bennies, so something like this is just our tough luck), plus wed already had notice that our landlord was selling our house out from under us at the end of this month and its doubtful FEMA will help with moving expenses. Further panic because hedge fund landlords have run amok here and regular people cant afford to pay double the rent. No response yet to our application but I know people from last years big storm who lost everything and were well compensated.
Weve been without power and keep getting texts that Miami (?!) and cities on the other coast are back to 100% but well be waiting until at least midnight on the 17th for power. Of course, thats FPL, not FEMA. Weve lost our food but again, the relief centers are too far to get to (doesnt help that my son is missing a leg, though he is able to ride his bikejust not that far, or with a load). Im not sure what FEMA could do to reach more people in need. Its a big town and they cant go door to door.
In general, though, people seem very grateful (especially for the linemen heading in from ALL over the country!), and I havent seen any evidence of anyone lying about FEMAs unwillingness to helpexcept the orange bawbag.
Ive had arseholes at stoplights yell at me for bumper stickers, but lately, that kind of shit doesnt seem as prevalent. Sarasota used to be a great democratic townyoud have to go back to Lawton Chiles, I suppose, to be able to say we were a great blue state. I wish I knew how long itll be before we can say that again, at least in the coastal areas. I suspect the farmers inland will always lean disgustingly right. Unlike NC, we have a much bigger proportion of people who are not from here, so I think its less likely well have that weirdly violent anti-FEMA crap.
Note my daughter is living in an RV on a mountain near Durham and escaped Helenes destruction entirely, but shes very wary of the MAGat bozos in general and is pretty good about steering clear of them.

(23,421 posts)I am truly so sorry for what your family is going through. I hope Harris-Walz deal with the hedge fund manipulating of rentals. Id love to see Liz Warren put in charge of rectifying a bunch of consumer issues.
Glad your daughter is safe.
I hear you about how difficult getting help can be on multiple levels. I sure hope they can put a plan in place going forward to expediting aid because we know these disasters are only going to get worse.
One hour at a time, right? Stay safe.
