A first grade teacher in Riviera Beach, Florida, is accused of violently shoving a 7-year-old boy's head into a wall, causing him to lose a front tooth and injure his lip. Cynthia Smith, 64, a teacher at Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune Elementary School, was arrested Friday on a charge of child abuse. The school's principal, Katrina Granger, had contacted school district police the day before upon learning of the incident, according to an arrest report.
Smith was standing in a hallway near her classroom on Jan. 28 as students walked on both sides of her, according to the arrest report.
The boy was seen in the video moving his hands on a bulletin board, the arrest report states. Smith walked toward the child, leaned in and violently shoved him face-first into the wall, according to the report. The student's "head appears to snap back from the force," the arrest report says. Smith then walked away from the student, who had his head bowed and appeared to be "favoring his mouth area," the report says.
Police said the principal told them that Smith has worked at the school for 12 years and that she has been investigated on at least four other occasions. Principal Granger said she perceives Smith "as very aggressive towards the children, and she has received numerous complaints from parents on her behavior," the arrest report states.

(6,448 posts)Did anyone catch the phrase "school district police"? It wasn't the Riviera Beach police either. It was the district.
Raise your hand if you want to become a teacher. Yeah, I didn't think so.

(52,153 posts)and I told all my student teachers and High School ROP students to NOT go into the profession. None of them listened to me. When other, older teachers told me that they told their own kids not to become a teacher their own kids didn't listen either. We tried to warn them!

(52,153 posts)profession. They only saw the class for a few hours a day...the "best" part. They didn't have any clue about the issues in dealing with administrators, parents, district and state politics, financial issues in and out of the classroom as well as teacher pay and long hours, teaching to the test, etc.
One year 45% of my school's teachers retired early due to the top down policies of a new superintendent and the people he brought in to reshape the district. Yes, it can be THAT BAD! The district is still recovering from the mess he made. Over 75% of the librarians, counselors, tech help, ESL teachers, 2nd Lang teachers, Spec Ed teachers, custodians, aides, gardeners, nurses, etc were all laid off. Forget about The Arts altogether. Teachers are supposed to perform all of those duties as well. That is why I told them what the real story was. When 50% of new teachers leave the profession in the first five years, after all that money and time spent to become a teacher too, you know there is a problem.

(13,315 posts)Every year would start out with the back to school, staff meetings:
"We know you have a great deal of paperwork and record keeping to take care of. Now here's some more."
I left a $90K position as a classroom teacher because I couldn't take the bullshit anymore.

(13,315 posts)If I stayed, I'd be making over 100K,basic, with just a B.A. That didn't include the overtime or pay for covering other classes. As it was, with overtime, I made $100,080. on my last 1099 with the district.
O.T. and class coverage was $39.00 per hour. They had difficulty getting subs so teachers would cover several classes a month during their free periods.
Gym teachers had it best. This would consist of several gym classes at the same time. It was a large school. If a teacher was out, their class would be combined with other classes and the teachers would split the $39. By December of each year, this would happen several classes a week. Gym teachers were making over $125k.
