Athens police use of force against 10-year-old child prompts internal investigation

For the second time this summer, the Athens-Clarke County Police Department is under fire for police officers’ use of force.

This time, the circumstance stems from a Facebook video posted July 22 by Ariel Collins. It showed two Athens officers holding a 10-year-old boy on the ground after his father, Jawoski Collins, was arrested on July 20 for domestic violence charges.

The video was widely circulated on Facebook, garnering more than 15,000 shares and 450,000 views within a day of being posted. The video is no longer on Facebook because the minor’s face was visible.

ACCPD responded quickly to the video, sending out a press release and Facebook post explaining why the officer was forced to restrain the child.
