Abrams releases her disaster recovery plan for Georgia amid special legislative session

Georgia Governor Nathan Deal called for a special legislative session on Tuesday due to the losses from Hurricane Michael. The special session is to convene on Tuesday, November 21.

Much of the state’s agriculture industry has taken large financial losses of over $1 billion.

Governor Deal will leave office in January 2019 once a new governor is sworn in, and Democratic candidate Stacey Abrams released her disaster plan in anticipation of winning the governor’s seat in November.

In the face of future disasters, Stacey Abrams will:

• Implement the Disaster Assistance Grant Program for low- and middle-income Georgians to help families get back on their feet after a natural disaster
• Create the Rebuild Georgia Fund by working hand in hand with private donors and companies to help farmers quickly return to their livelihoods
• Temporarily suspend state sales taxes in the face of future disasters for Georgians living in the affected regions
• Revisit areas impacted by Hurricane Michael in her first 30 days as Governor
• Expand Medicaid for 500,000 more Georgians which will provide healthcare coverage for 18,300 Georgians in affected areas
• Create a refundable Georgia Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) to boost incomes for Georgia families across the state which would help 46,000 taxpayers in affected areas
