The number of new cases in the Gainesville area increased exponentially each week during April, according to state data. By Tuesday, nearly four dozen patients had died in the areas dominant hospital system.
State officials are setting up a mobile hospital and sending in reinforcements: as many as 100 physicians, nurses and other health care professionals.

The Gainesville outbreak, which has spread into neighboring Habersham County, is another indicator that the coronavirus is far from contained in Georgia. A report to the White House by the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention showed that in much of Georgia, including its northeast corner, confirmed cases of the virus continue to increase or, at best, have leveled off on a high plateau.
On Tuesday, a new model by researchers at the University of Washington contained its starkest projection yet for Georgia: as many as 4,913 COVID-19 deaths by early August. The projection shows deaths continuing to increase at a steady pace well into July.

Hmmm...you don't suppose Kemp could have made a mistake opening the State too soon, do ya?

(16,505 posts)'It was almost like when I went in there, it was a war zone': Arkansas nurse back from Georgia gives warning
EL DORADO, Ark. An El Dorado nurse is back home on Tuesday, after she spent the last week in Albany, Georgia on the frontlines.
LaDonna Young said she was willing to go and help for two different reasons: other states were in desperate need of extra hands and she wanted to see a different view.
"There's different ways to approach COVID, as far as diagnosis and treatment, so I kind of wanted to go and get a different idea of how it's treated and handled to help my patients in Arkansas," she said.
Young left her nurse practitioner role at the Medical Center of South Arkansas in El Dorado to help out as an RN in what some call "a coronavirus hotspot."

(1,278 posts)but Gainesville and Hall County (50mi NE of downtown Atlanta) are big poultry processing areas. The other major hotspot in Georgia, Albany/Daugherty County has food processing plants aplenty.
However, in my former home county, Lee County Alabama, there are no food processing plants (just finished goods) and is the home of Auburn University, and there is an outsized number of cases there. No explanations there.

(45,806 posts)about the chicken processing, mostly in Gainesville. I'm not sure that processing plant was the source of the increase in virus infections this time though. If it was, I'm sure we'll hear about it. I still think it's closer tied to Kemp's strong desire to please the orange one.

(1,278 posts)Eventually, they will admit to it. This is not a knock at all on Hall County, but it does seem strange that a county of ~200K people has more cases than where I live, which has ~1.1M people.
