Contrary to rumors, the Justice for Black Lives protest scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday at City Hall is moving forward, according to Mokah Jasmine Johnson, co-founder of the Athens Anti-Discrimination Movement.
Organizers said that Police Chief Cleveland Spruill confirmed that there have been no threats regarding the demonstration, and police are not recommending boarding up businesses.
I understand that people are nervous, but we must move forward with wisdom and without fear, Johnson said. Black people in this country are in danger every day. But we cannot let fear stop us from speaking out for our right to be safe in our communities.
The AADM has been coordinating with police and Athens-Clarke County Manager Blaine Williams in light of Sundays protest, which drew suspected members of the right-wing Boogaloo group and ended when police used tear gas to disperse the remaining crowd.

(21,613 posts)Later in the day, the Boogaloos apparently attempted looting/robbing the Academy Sports business (sells guns and ammo) way out on the west side of town.
Tim Denson, one of our current county commissioners, and founder of Athens For Everyone, was among those tear gassed.
I know Mokah Johnson, who is currently running for elected office, and I have worked with her on GOTV during the last election.
Thoughts are that, Athens-Clarke County native son, Gov. Brian KKKemp, planned the crackdown in retribution for blue Athens-Clarke County efforts to remove the Confederate memorial from the middle of Broad St across from the UGA Arches.
Ive been part of many protests downtown over the years. ALL were entirely peaceful and no scary Boogaloos were ever on the scene.

They love UGA Bulldogs football ( majority black team) but they are racists who hate black people.
