Atlanta Mayor Rolls Back City's Reopening Plans Back to Phase 1 as Coronavirus Cases Surge

Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms is ordering residents to stay at home as she rolls back the city's reopening plans to Phase 1 amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

Bottoms issued the order on Friday "in response to the alarming increase in COVID-19 cases in the state of Georgia," according to a press release from her office.

“Based upon the surge of COVID-19 cases and other data trends, pursuant to the recommendations of our Reopening Advisory Committee, Atlanta will return to Phase I of our reopening plan,” said Bottoms said in a statement. “Georgia reopened in a reckless manner and the people of our city and state are suffering the consequences.”

Under Phase 1, residents are asked to stay at home with the exception of essential trips. Restaurants are also asked to limit business to only delivery and to-go orders.

to do the right thing. This happened because we have a DT ass kisser for a Governor & he opened everything too soon just to pleaser him!

The Athens-Clarke County Commission unanimously approved an emergency ordinance requiring people to wear face coverings while inside public places, such as businesses.

“We’re in a critical situation,” said Commissioner Melissa Link. “There’s no room to hope that people will just do the right thing.”

In addition, the ordinance passed Tuesday night requires employees at grocery stores, pharmacies, other retail stores, salons and restaurants are required to wear face coverings while interacting with the public.

Religious establishments are exempt, although wearing face coverings in churches and other places of worship is “highly recommended.” People who can’t safely wear a mask due to age, an underlying health condition or an inability to remove the mask are also exempt, as are children under 11 years old. Face coverings would not be required in cars, outdoors when a six-foot distance can be maintained, while alone or with other household members, or while eating, drinking or smoking.
