Richmond County holds candidate forum ahead of local election

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WFXG) - Several commission and mayoral candidates came together to hold a public forum at A.R. John Johnson Magnet School. The meeting was an opportunity for candidates to introduce themselves and their platforms to the community.

“Events like this are so important because we believe that the bedrock of our democracy is free and fair elections, civic engagement and informed citizens,” event co-sponsor Shavonne Williams said. “Events like this, where voters in the community can come together and hear the candidates, hear why they want to represent them and their positions on certain things, they can hear questions get answered. That way, they’ll be more informed when they go to the ballot on May 19.”

During the forum, candidates discussed several key issues. District 10 candidates Wayne Guilfoyle and Ben Hasan give their thoughts on data centers in Richmond County.

“I will not support another data center in Augusta-Richmond County,” Hasan said. “I will not support one. What we’ve learned in the last couple of years about data centers is that they’re not necessarily vital to the community.”
