Former Idaho Gov. John Evans has died

BOISE -- Former Idaho Governor John Victor Evans Sr. passed away this morning. He was 89 years old.

A spokesperson for the Summers Funeral Home in Boise says Evans died at 3:32 a.m. Tuesday at his home in Boise.

Evans, a Democrat, became governor on Jan. 24. 1977 after then-Democratic Gov. Cecil Andrus resigned to take over as Secretary of the Interior for President Carter. He was elected governor in 1978 and re-elected in 1982.

Evans was born on Jan. 18, 1925 in Malad, Idaho. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. After the war he attended Stanford University and graduated in 1951.

He was the most plain, down to earth, candid politician I have ever met.
He acted as if he was just another citizen, a regular guy.
In 1982, the Republicans that were in the state legislature at the time wouldn't lift a finger to help him stabilize the state's economy after the Sunshine Mine disaster closed that mine.
I remember when he made a public plea on tv for someone to step forward and buy out the mine to keep it from closing, and I thought to myself that had to be the strangest thing he ever said in public.
Jobs were disappearing from Idaho in droves, and the Reagan Recession didn't end here until 1988.
