Jury awards $667,000 to family of cyclist struck by Clearwater County deputy

OROFINO — A Clearwater County Sheriff’s Office deputy was found mostly negligent in the death of an Orofino woman struck by his vehicle while she was riding her bicycle on U.S. Highway 12.

In a civil action, a Clearwater County 2nd District Court jury awarded the heirs of Theresa Ann Grossklaus $667,903.20 in a unanimous verdict following a six-day trial in Orofino that concluded Tuesday.

The jury found sheriff’s Deputy Mitchell B. Jared and the county 65 percent liable in Grossklaus’ July 18, 2014, death. The jury found Grossklaus 35 percent negligent.

The lawsuit, filed in 2016 by Grossklaus’ family, alleged she was riding her bicycle east at about 10:30 a.m. on that day on the right-hand edge of the two eastbound lanes.
