Rauner's unprecedented TV ad seeks leverage against DemocratsRepublican Gov. Bruce Rauner launched an unprecedented TV ad campaign Tuesday, attacking powerful Democratic House Speaker Michael Madigan as state government teeters toward a shutdown next month.
The Rauner ad accuses Madigan of blocking the pro-business, anti-union changes the governor is seeking, saying all the speaker wants to do is raise taxes. At the Capitol, Madigan stuck to his weekslong theme by calling both the ad and Rauner's agenda "extreme."
Rauner's marketing tactic signals a new era in Illinois politics, with the wealthy governor taking his message directly to voters to try to gain leverage against his opponents in a continual campaign that goes far beyond traditional election contests. It's also in keeping with what Republicans privately say is Rauner's long-term strategy of demonizing Madigan in an effort to eventually reduce his power and influence.

But Rauner is willing to cut down on services of people with disabilities and the poor as long as you don't raise TAXES on the rich.
Edited to add: Rauner spent more than $30 million of his own money to get elected.
His political action committee reportedly will shell out another $800,000 in the next two weeks to tell the governor's side of the budget controversy.

(5,644 posts)but not everybody.
Anybody that will spend 30 million dollars to get elected in the first place, and says that Gov Walker is his hero, will be willing to spend money, money, money....to get his way.

Every time I see him in that ridiculous flannel shirt I want to upchuck. It's a shame he didn't get run over by that goddamn Volkswagon bus he was always talking about. F'ng billionaire trying to act like mister common joe. And sold that BS with 30 million dollars. Now he is trying to buy support for his filthy agenda with his money once again. A pox on him and anyone dumb enough to have voted for him.

(5,644 posts)the scum of the earth. This was the first time in many years (if ever, I don't recall) that I received literature and phone calls from a Repubic0n while he was running for governor. He was spreading money all over Chicago. He was handing out money all over the community to ministers and anybody else in need of some cold hard cash. I personally don't think he won the race, I think he stole it. Now he's taking money out of programs that are desperately needed from people with disabilities and children programs, but he doesn't want you to touch his taxes. Well, Rauner...it's not going to work next time for you and anybody else that sold us out.
btw: I'm not a big fan of Madigan, but he's doing his job right now.

(31,438 posts)Democrats gripe about him all the time. But as someone said upthread, Madigan did not get where is is by being popular. And we need someone with his power, or this state will go down the tubes.
I think Ruiner has met his match. Blagojevich found out what happens if you mess with Madigan or his family.
The ads are shocking. Ruiner looks manic in them. I hope people see what he is doing. I hope people see him for the greedy bastard that he is.
I don't think Madigan and the Democrats will run any ads. They will find another way to get at Ruiner.
