State of Illinois continuing to pay off debts to city of Springfield

The state of Illinois is catching up on its overdue bills to the city of Springfield using money from the stopgap budget passed in June.

The state has paid $11.3 million for electricity and water service to City Water, Light and Power in the last three weeks, said utility spokeswoman Amber Sabin.

Illinois still owes Springfield slightly more than $5 million, much of which is included in the stopgap budget.

“I’m not particularly concerned about the state’s late payments now with the temporary budget,” said city budget director Bill McCarty.
